Chet Edwards Speaks
...greeted by Tom Petty's "Won't Back Down!" Rousing response...I wish I knew more about Edwards.
He said he represents (besides Waco) Crawford, Texas...and he carried Crawford in the last election.
The one promise delay kept in his career was when he said "I want to govern in the worst possible way..." (huge laughs)
Edwards says he governs as a Democrat in the most Republican district in Texas...if he can do it, so can we. Hey...that makes lots of sense if you think about it, eh? He says we've failed to convey our values to former Texans...he's exactly right, too. He says we need to hone our message.
"Is there hope for Texas Democrats? You bet there is! If Montana can elect Democrats, SO CAN WE!" Applause...
4 things Edwards learned in his hard-fought 2004 re-election:
1. We've got to win at the ballot box. How? Build coalitions. Respect our diversity...can't be 1-issue litmus test voters.
2. We must DEFINE OUR VALUES clearly and concisely. Find those core values that define us, and then communicate those values, with discipline. Dignity for every individual...the party that believes that anyone who wants to work should be able to...we believe in percolate up economics, not trickle-down economics. We need to stop playing defense all the time, and start playing offense instead (applause).
3. We must define our opponents, especially when their record and their rhetoric is so far apart: our most powerful weapon is the truth. Republicans won't like it, but that's tough!
4. When they attack attack back...immediately!
