Bush Disobeys More Than 750 U.S Laws

Legal scholars say that Bush's assertion that he can bypass laws is upsetting the balance of power in our government. Bush believes that as president he has the right to ignore any law he chooses. The information in the Boston Globe article is disturbing, but I'm glad to see this sort of news in the mainstream press. Could this mean a more honest press corps and more truth in the future? I hope so!

Thank Colbert for his courage and humor!

Please go to this site if you would like to send a congratulatory note to Stephen Colbert. He kicked butt last night! If you're not sure what I'm speaking about, please refer to my earlier post.

This is an amazing piece! I can't believe Colbert was allowed to say these gems about the president at the Correspondents' Dinner! Great stuff!

The Protest In Kerrville

Today's Kerrville Anti-War Protest (or if you'd like to keep it postive, Pro-Peace Protest) went off quite nicely. The Hill Country Peace Movement provided some outstanding weather--about 74 breezy degrees--and it was a great time. Progressive Grannie and I represented the Kendall County Democrats amongst lots of people from Kerrville, Bandera, Fredericksburg and the brothers Moore from Utopia

(If you think about it, if there's anywhere peace ought to reign, Utopia is it!)

About 35 of us carried signs and waved to passers by for an hour, and there was a marked change from the last time we did this: hundreds of people honked and gave us thumbs up. I think that the Joe Sixpack is getting fed up.

Most inspiring reaction to me was this one: a motorist at a stop light saw my
GIVE IMPEACH A CHANCE
sign, and leaned across his wife to yell at me
"I voted for Bush and even I want him impeached!!!"
He was angry, but not at me. I don't know if he was angrier at himself for voting Bush, or Bush for doing what he's done.

I encourage all of us in the Hill Country to attend the protests. Will they stop the war? Not a chance. Will they remind you what's the difference between living in a land where there's freedom of speech and one where there's not? You're darned right it will. How do you know America's free? By going out and telling America it's made mistakes, and not ending up in jail, that's how.

More importantly, protesting for peace gets the word, the concept and the possibility of peace before the eyes of one of the reddest states in the country: Texas. This is GW Bush's back yard, and people here need to see that solid Texans have had enough of this incompetant, blundering, warring president. More to come in the coming months...keep your ears to the Kendallian tracks for more.

As the worm turns....

There are clues from the past about Rove's present date with the grand jury. It doesn't look good for old Karl. As noted in the Village Voice, it seems that there are several concerns for the investigators including Rove's truthfulness (or lack thereof), and the appearance of impropriety in the handling of the investigation by John Ashcroft. Rep. John Conyers noted that the Ashcroft had wel documented conflicts of interest in this matter, particulary regarding his relationship with Rove. Rove was employed by Ashcroft throughout his political career and had advocated for Ashcroft's appt to the Attorney General post. Not only that, but many Ashcroft's "inner circle" also were familiar with Rove and had worked closely with him.
This should get even more interesting as time goes by...

Pelosi pulls out a can of whup ass!

Nancy Pelosi tells the president where to get off when it comes to investigating the gosh darn gas crisis.

Need lower gas prices? Let's pollute!

Bush, what a moron!Earlier today he stated that we needed more "cellulostic sources for ethanol", so that we could "make something out of nothing." I kid you not! Later, I find out that he has eased environmental rules on gasoline, making it "easier" for refiners, and possibly lower gas prices. According to Business Week, these move came after political pressure intensified.
The best response to Bush's latest attempt to mollify voters? Barbara Mikulski who asked: "What happened to Iraq oil, Mr. President? You said Iraqi oil would pay for the war. Ain't seen no money. Ain't seen no oil."
So, the solution to the gas prices is to give the producers free reign to ruin the environment? What about developing alternative energy, you know a REAL plan? Oh wait, that would require someone with a) a brain, and b) concern for how we leave the planet for our children and grandchildren.

Today's Cheers and Jeers on Kos

Today's Daily Kos has so many great cheers and jeers today it's worth wandering over there to read, and best of all catch all the links!

Kerry takes same stance on different war

Before a wildly enthusiastic crowd of hundreds at Faneuil Hall yesterday, US Senator John F. Kerry exhorted Americans to speak out against the war in Iraq, declaring that troops are dying because of what he called an inept and deceitful policy orchestrated by the Bush administration.

It was the 35th anniversary of the day Kerry, as a young Navy veteran returning from the Mekong Delta in Vietnam, testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, famously asking, ''How do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake?"

Kerry's case yesterday was much the same: that Americans have a duty to speak out against a war that is sacrificing lives on the ''altar of stubborn pride."

''Presidents and politicians may worry about losing face or losing votes or losing their legacy; it is time to think about young Americans and innocent civilians who are losing their lives," Kerry said, to a thunderous standing ovation.

And then the Republicans rear their ugly heads.

Matt Wylie, executive director of the Massachusetts Republican Party, dismissed Kerry's criticism.

''John Kerry has been acting bizarrely ever since he lost the election for president," Wylie said yesterday. ''Today's speech is another strange step in that direction. There has never been a time in our nation's history when so many people freely gave dissenting opinions about the nation's policies from both ends of the political spectrum. John Kerry should hop on the Internet, and he'll see there is a dialogue about all the positions going on in America today."
How in the world can the Repugnants even come up with this kind of crap? Why would speaking out against the war in Iraq be considered bizarre behavior? Gosh, guess if you don't agree with Bush you are open to be smeared any way they can do it. I say, thanks Kerry for speaking the truth.

All of us need to speak truth to power and get out and demonstrate not only on April 29th, but also on June 2nd (date of the bomb test in Nevada).

Pentagon Clarifies Nevada Intent....

Explosives Test Not 'Nuclear'. So they say. However, read on...

Pentagon officials apologized to members of Congress yesterday for generating
fears about an unusual military experiment to detonate 700 tons of explosives in
the Nevada desert in June, and they said the test was not designed to simulate a
low-yield nuclear explosion, even though government budget documents had
described it that way.
I don't believe a word of it! The Bush administration can't keep denying things and calling them "mistakes" or whatever, and expect the American public to continually buy this B.S.
Read it in WAPO

A spring day in Massachusetts

William Rivers Pitt wrote an eloquent piece that I wanted to share it with everyone.

Not a Smoking Gun...a Smoking Cannon

Did you see 60 Minutes last night? There was a piece about the former highest-ranking CIA chief in Europe who had provided the Bush administration with a high-ranking Iraqi official. They were excited to speak to him because he was in a position to know about WMD programs.

Their enthusiasm quickly waned though, because he told them that the WMD programs were long gone. A couple of quotes that leave my blood boiling:

"The [White House] group that was dealing with preparation for the Iraq war came back and said they were no longer interested. And we said 'Well, what about the intel?' And they said 'Well, this isn't about intel anymore. This is about regime change.' "

And this one, with which I agree wholeheartedly:

"It just sticks in my craw every time I hear them say it's an intelligence failure," Drumheller told CBS' Ed Bradley. "This was a policy failure. I think, over time, people will look back on this and see this is going to be one of the great, I think, policy mistakes of all time."

And I wonder if this might finally be the scandal which sinks this lying ship of fools. This is shameful news which flies in the face of the many speeches we've seen the president make in the lead-up to the war, claiming the war wasn't inevitable. To read the CNN.com article with more more detail, go here.

A day without a Mexican?

With apologies to my family...
Can the USA run without Mexicans? Who will mow your lawn, pick your lettuce, stock the grocery shelves, clean your office? A Mexican of course. Why is this a problem now? Because Sensenbrenner, Bush and corporate America say so. If it had been such a problem before now, the US Govt would have enforced the Immigration Act of 1986, which I have not seen enforced since 1987!
I see it as divisive and racist, on purpose. You see, we are dumbing down our schools, so where will our kids and grandkids work when there are no more Wal-mart of McD's jobs? Picking lettuce and mowing lawns. Corporate america will have succeed in keeping down wages, union busting, and the middle class will be gone.

Check out A Day Without A Mexican, the movie to get an idea of how it could be on May 1st when immigrants in the US and Mexico boycott the US. I say GO FOR IT you guys! Teach the US and corporate america a lesson.

...And yes, we have some proud Mexican immigrants in my family. However, my ancestors are Irish...remember the days when Irish need not apply for a job? Surely they taught you that in history class? It's a game played by the rich so that some poor schmuck immigrant group must always be at the bottom of the totem pole. Irish, Chinese, Polish, now Mexicans...the list will be endless until we see the value of the melting pot that we live in. [After all, you do like the food that immigrants bring to this country, right? Well, they bring a lot more value that that!]

some levity...

MEXICAN EARTHQUAKE

A big earthquake with the strength of 8.1 on the Richter scale has hit Mexico.
Two million Mexicans have died and over a million are injured.
The country is totally ruined and the government doesn't know where to start with providing help to rebuild..
The rest of the world is in shock.

Canada is sending troopers to help the Mexican army control the riots.
Saudi Arabia is sending oil.
Other Latin American countries are sending supplies.
The European community (except France) is sending food and money.
The United States, not to be outdone, is sending two million replacement Mexicans.

God Bless America!!

Thanks to my brother-in-law, a proud US citizen, formerly from Mexico, for this joke.

Senate Hearings on Bush, Now

In this month's Vanity Fair Carl Bernstein calls for bipartisan hearings investigating the Bush presidency. He believes that there is enough evidence to find out what this president, his vice president and their political and national security aides knew, and that we need their answers now. We need to know what they have done under 'the guise of National Security'. Mr. Bernstein has written a fascinating article, suggesting that the American people need the truth. He also suggests that this will help the Republicans in November. Of course, any Watergate style hearings will require several Republicans to admit that this is an administration full of liars and that seems unlikely.

DIVINE STRAKE

DIVINE STRAKE If Bush's desire to perform a test of this nuclear device on June 2nd doesn't scare the hell out of you, then you must be a chickenhawk like Bush.

Look at the names of the devices as listed:
Divine Strake
Divine Warkhawk
Divine Helcat
Divine Hates

Further explained in the article as: DIVINE STRAKE is one of several "DIVINE" efforts under the Hard and Deeply Buried Target Defeat (HDBTD) program. DIVINE WARHAWK consists of deep underground operational tunnel facility defeat demonstrations using advanced weapons at the White Sands Missile Range. DIVINE HELCAT was a 2004 reconstitution exercise to determine reconstitution time for the C3I tunnel facility at Nevada Test Site (NTS). Also in 2004 planning began for DIVINE HATES, which is a WMD production and storage tunnel complex functional defeat effort.

Worse, are the "divine" bombs to be used in the quest to bring on Armageddon in the middle east?

I just noted something I missed in the article, the definitions of divine and strake, which should scare the hell out of you even more.

Divine: Having the nature of or being a deity. Of, relating to, emanating from, or being the expression of a deity: sought divine guidance through meditation. Being in the service or worship of a deity; sacred. Superhuman; godlike. Supremely good or beautiful; magnificent: a divine performance of the concerto. Extremely pleasant; delightful: had a divine time at the ball. Heavenly; perfect.
Strake: A device for controlling air flow over an aircraft. A strake is also a part of a boat or ship used for generally the same purpose in water rather than air. It is a strip of planking in a wooden vessel or of plating in a metal one, running longitudinally along the vessel's side, its bottom or between them on the turn of the bilge.

Firefighters stumble on basement marijuana farm

Associated Press in Ohio
Tuesday April 18, 2006
The Guardian

US firefighters tackling a blaze in an attic were confused when the man they had thought was the owner of the house suddenly left - until they found $700,000 (£400,000) worth of marijuana plants in the basement.

"If it were my home burning, I'd want to be there," said Fire Chief Ralph Copley of Wadsworth, Ohio. After extinguishing the fire early on Friday, officers found 239 marijuana plants filling a quarter of the basement.

Investigators from the federal drug enforcement administration were trying to find two people who left the house. The cause of the fire was unknown.

South Dakota's Purity Ball

http://orwellsgrave.blogspot.com/2006/03/why-i-saved-my-first-kiss-for-marriage.html
This blog is right on the mark. Abstinence only won't work. Any of us that are no longer teenagers can certainly remember what it was like to be a teenager, and how strong our urges were. If we don't then we are in total denial. We should be teaching not only the virtues of abstinence, but be realistic enough to teach about contraception, and more, covering all the issues of sexuality. If we don't we are lying to ourselves and our children.
This whole idea of a purity ball just creeped me out!

Daily Kos: A Good Science Friday

Representative Brad Miller (D--North Carolina)sits on the House Committee on Science, and was interviewed in this article. Daily Kos: A Good Science Friday

The interview is concerned with suppression of science by the Bush administration. Examples found in the House Government Reform Committee (pdf document) included suppression over a wide range of agencies and policy areas including the following:

  1. Manipulation of scientific advisory committees: appointing unqualified persons with industry ties and/or ideological agendas; stacking advisory committees; opposing qualified experts
  2. Distorting and suppressing scientific information by doing the following: including misleading information in presidential communications; presenting incomplete and inaccurate information to Congress; altering web sites; suppressing agency reports
  3. Interfering with scientific research

Another example of the way in which our country is being manipulated by religious whackos and neocons, each with their own scary agenda.

Buckle Your Seatbelts. The Dixie Chicks Are Back

If you don't know who the Dixie Chicks are, they're three Texas ladies who ran afoul of the powers that be when, just before President Bush started the war in Iraq, and during a London concert Natalie Maines said

"Just so you know, we're ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas."

This being the United States of America, the land of the free, that statement doesn't sound like it would turn our freedom-loving souls upside down, but that's exactly what it did. The right wing exploded in anger and a boycott ensued. I won't go into detail, but things got very ugly for the trio, who dared actually take their freedom of speech as more than a hollow promise.

Three years and at least three babies later, they're back. And judging by the lyrics of their first song, they're making no apologies:

"I’m not ready to make nice/I’m not ready to back down/I’m still mad as hell and I don’t have time to go round and round and round..."

There's also a rather artsy and very intense music video of the song which I highly recommend.

I think we Democrats can use more of the kind of strength I see in these women. Standing up for your beliefs is what we've had too little of. Check out the video and let me know what you think.

Returning Reservist delayed by airport security

This is so ridiculous. In my travels I have certainly noticed the the "Homeland Security" folks are totally inflexible, are unable to perform critical thinking skills, and could not find their way out of a paper bag with directions. This is a perfect example of their inflexible thinking.

A Marine reservist returning home after eight months in Iraq was told he couldn't board a plane to Minneapolis because his name appeared on a watch list as a possible terrorist.

Staff Sgt. Daniel Brown, who was in uniform and returning from the war Tuesday with 26 other Marine military police reservists, was delayed briefly in Los Angeles until the issue was cleared up.

The other reservists arrived at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport as scheduled, but instead of immediately meeting their families, they waited on a bus for Brown.

"We don't leave anybody behind," 1st Sgt. Drew Benson said. "We start together, and we finish together."

Brown, 32, arrived more than an hour later. He had also had airport trouble when he was trying to go to Iraq — and he missed his plane then as well.

"A guy goes over and serves his country fighting for eight or nine months, and then we come home and put up with this?" he asked.

Nico Melendez, a spokesman for the Transportation Security Administration, said Wednesday he could not confirm or deny whether someone was on a watch list. He said Brown's case should have been fairly easy for the airline to clear up in Los Angeles.

"It should have taken 10 minutes," he said. "We do regret that an American hero was inconvenienced."

April's KCADW Meeting

This month's meeting was held at Gwen Adrian's home, and it was quite a lovely gathering. We had baked ham, fruit salad and delicious chocolate covered strawberries. Our featured speaker was Kathi Thomas, who's running for State Senator against Jeff Wentworth. She was quite eloquent and passionate.

The club also voted to participate in three parades, so come on out and make a showing. We'll do Berges Fest, July 4th in Comfort, and it's back to Boerne again in September for the County Fair.

Watching America a Pakistani point of view

Watching America
Interesting point of view. I certainly agree with the statement that rational minds must prevail....Bush just doesn't seem rational.

Gutting higher education

There's been this relentless shelling of higher education," said David L.
Warren, president of the National Association of Independent Colleges and
Universities, who does not sit on the commission but has attended its meetings.
If included in the final report, several of the proposals "would
fundamentally undercut the commission's credibility," he said. "These would
include the dismantling of the current accreditation system, the demolition of
the federal student aid program, and the demotion of higher education to the
role of handmaiden to business needs."

This article reviews various proposals regarding the total revamping of funding at colleges and universities. It includes a proposal to test all college students, just like their counterparts in elementary school and high school are tested. It is alread obvious that testing and "no child left behind" is leaving millions of children behind, so why in the world would they consider this for colleges and universities? Look at it this way, soon only the rich will be able to go to college, the middle class will be gone, and we will all be working for corporate bosses, with no say about our working conditions. Next thing you know, we will be the illegal border crossers. Of course, dumbing down our education system will help corporations because the population will be too stupid to rise up because they won't understand the constitution, democracy, or their rights as citizens.

Ohio Patriot Act - Opinion
This is a bad precedent by Ohio. It was signed yesterday. Just think, now in Ohio you can be arrested or at least asked for "your papers" even if you are suspected of thinking about committing a crime, or are in a "terrorist sensitive area", certainly nebulous terminology.

Bunch of Shady Democrats At It Again

It was the brainchild of shady Boerne Democrat Ann Dietert. Last year she proposed that we Kendall County Democrats buy a native tree and plant it on the little too sunny Old #9 Bikeway. It was a great idea, but the wheels of buracracy turn slowly and instead of waiting on us, to her credit, Ann went ahead and bought a nice-sized Bur Oak.

An idealistic group of us showed up last spring to help plant, and we managed to find nearly every rock in Boerne in one 2 & 1/2 foot hole. It was amazing. We got it done though, and it survived its first summer due to the diligent lugging and pouring of water, once again on the part of Ann.

During the last Kendall County Democrats meeting Ann presented the plaque she had purchased in our names to mark the site so that Boerneites (especially those foolish enough to be Republicans) know who's responsible for the shade they'll get as the years go by and the tree starts casting some.

So this evening a bunch of us (Ann, Jack and Natalie Morgan, Katherine Long, Dani Vollmer and Sarah White) showed up to dig the hole and put the sign in concrete. As it turns out, we found all the rocks we hadn't found in that original hole, so Boerne has officially been quarried out.

So as you get your exercise on the bike path, stop by and admire your club's handiwork. If you park at the parking lot on the Cibolo end of things, the tree is a couple of hundred yards up on your left, next to a bench. Is it co-incidence that the bench is the one nearest Dietert Street? Mmm...I wonder...
I had Mr. Wizard, my kids had Bill Nye the Science Guy, our childhood science idols. Some lucky kids in Waco got to see Bill Nye. However, their experience was ruined by some religious freaks who stood up and yelled "we believe in a God!" and stampeded out the door. That's astounding to me. Perhaps some of us should start disrupting their worship services, since they think they can disrupt everything from miltary funerals to science lectures. Waco Tribune

I've known too many honorable illegals to think that they deserve that kind of fate. They've dug too many holes, sheered too many sheep, changed too many tires for Amercans lucky enough to have been born here, to not deserve a fair hearing.

I think the Republicans have made a mistake. In a cynical attempt to arouse their base, they've aroused the Democratic one instead. That would be nice, eh?

Kendall County Folks, Note the Calendar

Hey, everybody...see anything different about the Kendallian voice? Just below the picture above is a button saying VIEW MY CALENDAR. Give that button a punch. It'll take you to a calendar with lots of different postings on it. Some are meetings of the two Kendall County Democratic club events. One posting is about Tuesday's runoff election (be sure to vote!) Some are things like the Easter protest in Crawford.

You too can post events that everyone should know about. Just give it a try. Posting your granddaughter's birthday...no, as special as that is, I don't think that quite falls within the boundary of what should make it there.

Please check the calendar often. We'll be adding things as we think of them. This calendar is for events for both the evening and the women's club, so Kendallians, please consider it your event bulletin board!

Come be a Tree Hugger!

Next Tuesday, April 11 at 6:30pm, join us at the Bur Oak we planted on the Hike and Bike Trail in Boerne. We'll be placing a beautiful plaque by the tree to commemorate its planting one year ago this month.

Just park in the lot next to the River View nursing home and walk on the path for about a 1/4 mile. You'll see a bunch of fellow tree huggers waiting for you!

Speaking truth to power

Another Homeland Security pervert

This occurred 10/27/05, and of course, this is not mentioned in current news accounts. I would think if you were reporting the Doyle story, you might want to mention this as well. Ah well, I am no reporter. Oddly enough, every link I have tried to this article on Figueroa in the Orlando Sentinel no longer works, but it did yesterday. I did find this link Worse, his badge number as near as I can tell from other blogs, is 007.

The head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in Central Florida was arrested late Tuesday after exposing himself to a 16-year-old girl, according to Orlando police. Frank Figueroa, head of ICE's Tampa office, began fondling himself after catching the teen's eye in the upscale Millenia Mall an arrest report states. "The nature of Figueroa's actions do corrupt the public morals and outrage the sense of public decency," the report states. "Due to the small children in the area...Figueroa's actions did create a threat to the safety and well being of others." Charged with exposure of sexual organs and disorderly conduct...

Lampson supporters shoved

From Nick Lampson's campaign via email today (emphasis mine). DeLay is a fascist pig for sure! link

At a press conference on the steps of the Sugar Land city hall, where Nick Lampson called on Tom DeLay to resign so a May 13th special election can be held to fill his seat, DeLay's goons showed up to harass, assault, and intimidate. A number of female Lampson supporters, including Marsha Rovai, a 69 year-old woman from Richmond, reported being pushed and shoved by belligerent DeLay goons at the event.

Said Marsha Rovai, "I can't believe my Congressman, Tom DeLay, would organize this type of assault. I was assaulted by two different people. One of the men hit me and another shoved his sign into my face, and then when I pushed his sign away he violently pulled my hat down over my eyes and pushed me. I'm considering filing an assault charge. This is just very upsetting and I'm so disappointed in Tom Delay for organizing this attack."

Please stand with Marsha, and all the residents of TX-22, in demanding that Tom DeLay and his goons stop their campaign of intimidation.

KCDC Reminder

We're meeting this Thursday evening at 7pm in the BISD Admin Building on Johns Road. Hope to see you there!

The Hammer Gets Nailed

Surely you've heard by now, but if not: Tom Delay's decided not to run this fall.

If you're anything like me, you've just lept up and are beginning to sing "Ding-dong the witch is dead..." And while that sentiment is definitely a valid one, the other part of the picture is that he's resigning so that a credible republican can run against Nick Lampson.

Who knows if Governor Perry will call for a quick election to get someone to finish Delay's term or if he'll allow the seat to remain empty for between now and November. Seems to me it would be a waste of a lot of money to call for a special election now, then one 7 months from now.

Whatever the case, celebrate the passing of the House's most corrupt member...then think what you can do to make this a more meaningful event. We have got to take back Congress from those who have corrupted it so horribly. The poster child of that corruption is stepping down, but that doesn't mean corruption will disappear.

Attacking Iran May Trigger Terrorism

This was an item in the Washington Post. I have only one comment? Duh? You think so?

My, my the "brillant" folks in DC sure think slower than the rest of us, and I guess they were behind the door when common sense was passed out. I guess someone just snapped to this in a flash of brillance. To quote Homer Simpson: Doh!

I Love Helen Thomas!

Good for her. Bill O'Reilly said Bush should have punched her, but the public has spoken.

Do The Math Redux

Today my son wanted to get a copy of "Do the Math", an editorial written by Michael Kinsley that appeared in the Washington Post on August 4, 2004. My son remembered reading it and evidently felt he needed some backup for a discussion with a Republican friend of his. It wasn't hard to find the editorial.
Apparently Mr Kinsley was watching the Democratic Convention and wondering if one of the parties was a 'better steward' of the economy. It's no surprise to find that over the 43 years (1960 through 2002) he researched, the Democrats have a much better record.
If you remember the editorial, then you probably know that it's worth reading again.
