People Are Horses. Well, Kind Of...

Good morning everyone! Finally the day dawns bright. It's been a while hasn't it?

A brief posting: I posted on my blog some thoughts about individualism. It's too long to post here on the Kendallian site, but I hope you take time to go give it a read. I think it applies directly to us here in the land of Republicans.

Magnets Don't Equal Support!

Whenever I drive by a vehicle with a "Support the Troops" sticker I always wonder if the occupants of the vehicle have actually done more to support the troops than affixing that lousy sticker to the car! This article articulates some of my feelings about those ubiquitous signs!

"That is when I began to be annoyed by those ever-present, good-intentioned but mindless ribbons stuck on the back of cars and SUVs exhorting, "Support Our Troops." I find those magnetic messages to be offensive when I think of parents and friends of National Guard soldiers who purchased expensive Kevlar armor for their soldiers while Donald Rumsfeld said they didn't have any in stock."

Vermont--A True Blue State of Mind

Recent years have seen efforts to stamp out nuclear weapons, abortion restrictions, and the USA Patriot Act."

8,300 Bound for the Slaughterhouse

If you care about bait-and-switch politics,
if you care about American history,
if you care about the ecology,
if you care about wild horses, please give me a minute of your time.

During Thanksgiving, while most of us--Congresspeople and reporters included--had our attention focused elsewhere, Sen. Conrad Burns (R-MT) slipped a one-page rider, #142, into the 3,000+ page federal appropriations bill. Congress and Bush signed off on it. Quite possibly few in Congress even realized the rider was there; those who did notice, it's said, ignored the rider because they were concerned about getting the appropriations bill passed to avoid a government shut-down. There were no public hearings, no debate, no attention from the media. Thus Rider #142 was signed into law Dec. 8 and took effect Jan. 5.

Rider #142 permits the Bureau of Land Management, charged with the protection of America's wild horses, to sell these animals "without limitation" to the highest bidder. Any wild horse over the age of 10 and any so-called "three-strike horses" can be sold.

"Three strikes," in BLM parlance, doesn't mean the horse has committed three offenses or has three things wrong with it; "three strikes" means that the horse was put up for adoption three times and no one took him. This doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the animal; maybe he just doesn't stand out in the crowd. Maybe he's just not as spirited, or maybe he's more spirited. Maybe he's just not as pretty as others. And as for the age limitation, horses can live well into their 20s, even 30s, so to say that a 10-year-old horse is too old is equivelent to saying people over 35 ought to be put out to pasture.

"Without limitation" is the key phrase in #142. On Jan. 8--just three days after the law took effect--the Bandera Bulletin reported that the BLM had "already approved a lump sale of over 8,300 wild horses and burros to a single buyer."

Over 8,300 animals to a single buyer.

What individual or group would need 8,300 wild horses? What individual or group would even have the land to sustain that many wild animals, and the means to feed them, protect them from predators, provide for their medical needs?

Unless, of course, these animals are not going to be sustained.

The Burns bill gave the BLM permission to sell wild horses without regard for the buyer's intentions. The BLM now has permission to sell to slaughterhouses--and we're not just talking dog food here. Three slaugherhouses in the U. S., including two in Dallas, sell horse meat to high-priced restaurants in Europe and Japan.

If you find any of this abhorrent--either the slaughter of our wild horses for purpose of entertaining the gullets of the wealthy, or the way this bill was passed--please add a comment to this post. I'm working on getting HR 297, the Rahall/Whitfield Bill, passed. 297 amends the Burns bill to prohibit the BLM from selling to slaughterhouses.

A strategic viewpoint of the South

Already, two strong potential Democratic gubernatorial candidates in the Deep South are focused on winning by swaying suburban moderate voters."

They're Going After AARP Now...

Be very afraid--when the Bushies start going after the senior citizens this aggressively, you know they're pure evil!

"They are the boulder in the middle of the highway to personal savings accounts," said Charlie Jarvis, the president of USA Next, a conservative lobbying group. "We will be the dynamite that removes them." He sounded more like Wile E. Coyote than a former interior official in the Reagan and Bush I administrations. "They can run, but they can't hide," he said. But the walker-and-cane set is hard to picture in the Road Runner role."

All Politics is Local

One of objectives of Democracy for America (formerly Howard Dean's campaign organization) is the support of progressives in state and local races. If you had any idea that the local races (mayor, city council, dog catcher) are below the radar of the parties, think again.

Here's a Houston Chronicle article on how the Houston Republican party organization is working to do the same thing. Take this as a warning shot -- the Republican objective is to institute a one-party rule in the US. Think 1933 Germany.

He doesn't do impromptu!

This article from a German magazine tells the story that Republicans here refuse to believe...their president can't be spontaneous because his handlers are terrified of what he'll say!

"The Germans, though, insisted that a free forum should be exactly that. Wolfgang Ischinger, Germany's Ambassador to the United States, explained to the New York Times last week: "We told them, don't get upset with us if they ask angry questions."

In the end, the town hall meeting was never officially dropped from the agenda of the trip -- instead it was dealt with in polished diplomatic style -- both sides just stopped talking about it."

The Leninist Plan and Social Security

Article from the Washington Post regarding changing social security stated in part:
"Heritage Foundation analysts Stuart Butler and Peter Germanis authored a what-do-we-do-now article in the Cato Journal in 1983. The piece, 'Achieving a Leninist Strategy,' called for mobilizing support among financial institutions that would profit from privatization. As well, 'an economic education campaign,' they wrote, 'must be undertaken to demonstrate the weaknesses of the current system.' "

The 1983 article in the Cato Journal also noted: "Lenin recognized that fundamental change is contingent both upon a movement's ability to create a focused political coalition and upon its success in isolating and weakening its opponents...we would do well to draw few lessons from the Leninist strategy...we must construct a coalition that will reap benefits from the IRA based private system Ferrara has proposed but also the banks, insurance companies and other institutions that will gain from providing such plans to the public."

To Blog...or Not To Blog...That's Not A Question!

Without question, the care and feeding of a good blog means that it must be fed every day. No exceptions. Holidays? Tough. Sick? Sorry. If you can sit in a chair and type, then you must feed the blog every day. I guess you all can't. But of the half-dozen or more of us willing to look foolish in public, we must!

So what could I possibly talk about today? Oh... here's something. From President Bush's keynote address in Brussels he spoke of the fracturing of relations between the US and Europe in the lead-up to the Iraq war: “No temporary debate, no passing disagreement of governments, no power on earth will ever divide us."

I view the war as SO much more than a temporary debate or a passing disagreement of governments. The bite sounds quite good, as it was intended to, the words once again reflecting that Bush resolve in the "will ever divide us" phrase. But with estimates ranging from the tens of thousands of Iraqis dead, the nearly 1500 Americans dead and the 10,000+ injured, this is far more than Bush characterizes it.

As Mr. Bush retires to the gentleman Texas ranchlife four years hence, there will be tens of thousands of Americans dealing with horrific injuries and psychological scarring. Will Mr. Bush do everything he can to increase the physical and mental health and care for veterans? Methinks not. There are too many tax cuts to give away.

And as our so-called-liberal-media lauds Bush's humble attempts to mend the fences he flattened in his mad dash to declare war, that media will probably never mention what a waste of time it is to mend fences that never had to be broken

Do we know whose lists we are on?

American News 02/17/2005 Do we know whose lists we are on? More than 40 people in Aberdeen were on a do not admit list, and were not to be admitted to a Bush function touting his new social security plan.
This is a free country? Democracy exists in America? Sounds more like a communist state to me. So, I am probably on every list there is. I voted Democratic, contributed to Howard Dean, gave money to the ACLU and TARAL pro-choice America. I guess that will put me at the top of the do not admit list to just about anything the Bush administration does. We are denied admission to Presidential appearances, news is sanitized, most of us only hear what the President and his ilk want us to hear. That is, unless we obtain our news from sources outside the country, or from the Spanish Channels on TV, which are excellent. We are herded by the media, and given propaganda from our government, so that we will toe the party line. Those of us in disagreement are ridiculed, derided and more.

This makes me thing about my last vacation which included a visit to Dachau....

The ideas of the Nazi movement strove towards a "radically pure national body." All "elements" that "weakened" it or which did not "fit in" were to be removed. Such notions gave expression to a racism in which people were classified and treated as superior or inferior according to biological characteristics. The National Socialists propagated above all hostile images. Hatred of Jews was also a centuries old tradition in Germany. Jews were first discriminated against for religious and socially motivated reasons. Since the 19th century, more and more "race-ideological arguments" were being put forward. The National Socialists combined both forms " anti-Judaism and anti-Semitism."

IMHO: in the first paragraph insert the words non-Christian, Islamic, and/or gay for Jew; that is the climate in the USA today.

See any parallels? Are you old enough or educated enough to remember the McCarthy era? If you don't agree, you will be blackballed. Why must we toe Bush's party line? Why does he exclude those who do not agree? Is it fear? Or is it because he is so convinced that he is right and has a God-given right to rule us, that he refuses to acknowlege any person with an opinion contrary to his. After all, if we don't believe, we are wrong. Period.

Those of us who don't agree must continue to work for change. We must work to get our country back from this madness!

President Bush Clueless...again

Recent Bush quote: "Uniquely American isn't it? I mean, that is fantastic that you're doing that. Get any sleep?"
That was said in response to a divorced mother of 3 (in Omaha, NE), who worked three jobs to make ends meet. I am sure Bush thought the "get any sleep" line was just hilarious. Bush, who never held a real job, never had to figure out how to make ends meet and who probably doesn't know that beans and cornbread make a complete protein, thus stretching those food dollars, had the unmitigated gall to answer this woman flippantly. It must be good to be king (George).

I Know What You're Thinking...

You're thinking "Is Jeff Gannon really that bad? Has he been unfairly maligned? How can I really judge him without hearing all the questions he asked Scott McClellan and the President over the last couple of years?"

I'm thinking you're right. And one of those fabulous things about the internet is that someone has done precisely that, and posted the site which contains it. Thanks to Keith Olbermann's Countdown for having the cojones to continue to keep this story alive as the so-called mainstream press is content to just let it go away. His show is extremely entertaining, very well-produced, and thought-provoking. It's like a PBS program that has a polished sizzle that you don't often find there. Locally, it's on at 7PM on MSNBC, and I highly recommend it.

Procedural Question for the Experienced Activist

Being inexperienced in political activism, I have a question for anyone who's worked on getting a federal law passed. Is there anything a private citizen can do to make sure that a bill that's now sitting in a committee will eventually get out of committee and onto the floor? Does it help to contact the committee members, even if you're not a constituent of any of them?

Real News...Fake News--Fair And Balanced

I've refrained from talking about this story, but it's becoming such a huge deal that I knew I had to share! Much of the media has covered it now, including CNN's Anderson Cooper and MSNBC's Keith Olbermann.

Excerpt from Frank Rich's column:

" If we did not live in a time when the news culture itself is divorced from reality, the story might end there: "Jeff," you'd assume, was a lapdog reporter from a legitimate, if right-wing, news organization like Fox, and you'd get some predictable yuks from watching a compressed video anthology of his kissing up to power. But as Olbermann explained, "Jeff Gannon," the star of the montage, was a newsman no more real than a "Senior White House Correspondent" like Stephen Colbert on "The Daily Show." Yet the video broadcast by Olbermann was not fake. "Jeff" was in the real White House, and he did have those exchanges with the real McClellan and the real Bush."

FREEDOM: It's Like Your Car

You have to maintain it. If you don't keep it tuned up then it will degenerate and not be what it once was. Correspondent Progressive Grannie brought this article to my attention.

It's not earth-shattering stuff. It's just that pesky stuff that chips away at what we think our country is all about. And it's the kind of thing this administration has done a lot of ever since they got into office. 9-11 was their carte blanche, the teat they've been milking for the last 4 years that allows them to do anything in the name of safety and security.

Okay...after I get you all rattled with that article, let me give you something decidedly lighter. It's a silly little item about what to expect if you decide to take the easy route and give up the hard work of being a virtuous Democrat, and become a Republican. Something To Remember: THEY WORK FOR YOU

You send senators and representatives to Washington to represent you. When they asked you for your vote, they said they'd look after your best interests. So how have they done?

You can measure a whole range of different issues. From the war in Iraq to women's rights to how they vote on taxes. And then there's the environment. I don't know how you feel about the air you breathe, but it's kind of important to me. And water's right up there too.

There's a very good organization called the League of Conservation Voters. They're a bunch of folks who look at the environment as if their lives depended on it (which seems kinda smart if you think about it!). And they have compiled a breakdown which rates how YOUR senators and congressmen voted on environmental issues. They then assign a percentage to how your lawmakers are doing. The higher the score, the better your legislators voted to protect the environment.

Ya wanna see the breakdown for those who represent you in Washington? All right... here it is.

I want you to go to the sites, so all I'll say is this: SHAME ON YOU Texas Legislators. These folks obviously care more about those who wish to make money wreaking havoc on the environment than they do about your kids' future. As you think about whom to vote for the next time around, I hope you'll consider how they're looking after your grandchildren's environment. Because that's what this is about: the future. And these folks are doing a lousy job of looking after it.

For those of you new to the "blogosphere" I just want to pass along some other great blog sites for informative as well as entertaining postings. The three main blogs are Daily Kos, Eschaton(Atrios), and AmericaBlog. Two others that I personally enjoy visiting are Brilliant at Breakfast and Nero Fiddled.

Show Them Your Money

It's very important to me and to my family (except for the son-in-law from hell) to support businesses who make their polital donations to Democrats instead of the other guys. For instance, Costco gives close to 100% to the Democrats. Costco also pay it's employees high wages and pays 92% of their health benefits. That alone makes them truely blue.
There is a wonderful website that lists the political donations of many companies, right down to the percentage to each party. I even found my favorite olive oil is red; now I have to find a new brand. But it's worth it!

Boerne Activism

It's exploding. Ya gotta love it!

Within a month of its creation, Boerne Together is having 150-person meetings, getting the city council to order a new master plan written, and making San Antonio television. Suddenly, BT is a real player in the decision-making process in Boerne. What remains to be seen is precisely what their plan will be, and if they can keep their momentum going. But I applaud their passion and their willingness to step up and be heard.

We Kendall County Democrats, at a time when we could still be reeling from the November election, when we might be licking our wounds and wondering when we'll fully get back in the race, instead are creating blogs to keep the information flow up. We're writing letters to state representatives (and getting responses). We're inviting distinguished speakers so that we can learn more about our world (see the post about Sarwat Husain below).

Republicans aren't the enemy--they're just misinformed. The enemy is inertia. And it seems to me that we've got inertia on the run. Even right here in Boerne.

Bush's Judges and the Federalist Society

I learned about the Federalist Society while listening to Terry Gross' program Fresh Air on NPR. It was quite chilling. The Federalist Society members want Judges appointed during the Bush administration that reflect their view of the constitution and interpretation of the constitution. This would turn us back to 70 years to a point in time when judges vetoed such things as child labor laws, equal protection under the law and environmental protection. Imagine a world prior to 1837, when the rich owned everything, and everyone else worked for them. For example, the Triangle Factory Fire in 1911 when workers worked long hours for low wages, in unsafe and unsanitary conditions, before unions were formed. Allowing Bush to pack the courts with these types of judges will turn back the clock on OSHA safety requirements, wages, working hours and of course, anything that benefits the employee that would cost the owner dollars and/or profit. We need to wake up and smell the coffee! Join your local Democratic party and/or Democracy For America. Our voices must be heard, if we want to protect the New Deal programs that helped our country grow to be the great place it is today. The least of these our brethren...we are responsible for our community and our country.

We're the Kyoto No-Go

The Kyoto Protocol goes into effect today. The Kyoto agreement was pounded out to try as a worldwide effort to cut back green house gas emissions. Most of the civilized, and much of the Uncivilized world are civilized enough to participate, and try to do what they can. Unfortunately, one of the Bush administration’s first actions was to withdraw from Kyoto.

NPR had a very good story this morning on it, with reports from Italy, China and Moscow. It’s embarrassing sometimes that the country that produces the most amount of greenhouse gases and has the most scientific evidence to know the importance of cutting back greenhouse gases is also the country which has actively worked against it.

We can do better than this. We will do better than this! Locally, I think the environment should be on our radar too. Speak out! Become more informed.

I'm talking about what he believes in. I'm talking about how he's going to galvanize Democrats' resolve, get them off their butts and back in positions of power--right where they belong.

Hey, This is fun!

Glad we have a blog for us Kendall County Dems! As my first post I would like to reprint an excerpt from a column in the printed Kendallian, titled Why You Should Get Cable:

"A recent Daily Show episode showed a town meeting that President Bush held in Maryland. The subject was Social Security reform, and strangely every one of the people in the town meeting supported Bush's plan. Perhaps it wasn't so strange, given that the screening folks who kept the riff-raff away from Bush campaign rallies also screened this alleged town meeting. Several clips were shown, and of course the President, operating in a crowd of Bush loving devotees, had that cocksure Chimpy McFlightsuit demeanor that rubs so many of us the wrong way..."

But alas, where is the So-Called Liberal Media (SCLM) that we hear so much about? You'd think that the president calling something a town meeting that in fact was a pre-arranged pep rally would at least warrant some questions at the president's next press conference (he has them...I remember a few...). The SCLM was missing in action though, as they oft are these days. And now when it's been revealed that a right-wing non-journalist somehow landed a place on the White House Press Corps, that too isn't worth much more than a mention by the legitimate press. Begs the question: don't they have to EARN the title of legitimate press?
